Arequipa has a variable relief. Beginning with the coastal desert and rising within the Andes and reaching high altitudes with snow-capped mountains and volcanoes. It is also called the White City, due to the fact of having been built with beautiful, white stone walls, made from the volcano stones. The city is located in the skirts of the impressive Volcanoes Chachani and Misti and the snow-capped Pichu Pichu. The center of the city was announced as UNESCO world heritage in 2000. Arequipa offers you a great historical heritage. You will find temple and old colonial buildings in a baroque style, as well as the convent of Santa Catalina, a Spanish miniature city with narrow stone streets, beautiful patios and market places. Sabandía, Tiabaya and Tingo, in the greater area, are places to visit to try the rich cuisine of Arequipa, as the perfect complement for the visitor.
The Valley of the Colca Canyon, the deepest canyon in the world, is only a few hours away from the city. This is one of the unique destinations in the country. In the entire region we will find till today colorful, Andin, pre-Inca cultivations of quinoa, corn, barley and wheat. In the pre-Hispanic Époque there lived the Collaguas and Cabanas in this department. The inhabitants did know about the conservation of their churches, such as Yanque, Larid and Magdrigal and continue to dress with fancy suits. You can also practice sports such as mountain biking, trekking and canoeing in this valley. At the cross of the Condor you will be able to see the majestic flight of the condor, the biggest flying animal in the world.
