On the opposite side of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu as Huayna Picchu Peak is another, almost always overlooked peak, Putucusi (Happy Mountain). 250m west of the train station in Aguas Calientes, following the railroad tracks downhill, is a sign identifying the Putucusi Trail. It's a steep one-hour 300m ascent with a few near- vertical wooden ladders which on clear days will earn you stunning views from its summit (2370m above sea level) overlooking the Urubamba River and Machu Picchu.

The Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum at the base of the footpath to Machu Picchu is a small and often overlooked but fascinating introduction to the discovery of Machu Picchu as well as its construction, its purpose, and the history of its archaeological excavations and their findings. There are some artifacts which remained after Hiram Bingham took the bulk to Yale University as well as maps and video presentations which will give you the context to appreciate the ruins more thoroughly.

Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), trekkers can relieve their sore muscles in the thermal baths from which the town got its name and which are long- believed to have medicinal properties. These small sulfurous pools 8 blocks, or 15min, from town average 38ºC-46ºC and are equipped with changing rooms, bathrooms, and a small snack bar cafeteria. Swimwear, sandals, and towels are mandatory but can be bought or rented in the vicinity along with other necessities like sun block.

Hiram Bingham III was a lecturer at Yale University fascinated by the idea of unexplored Inca cities in Peru. In search of the Lost City and last Refuge of the Incas, Vilcabamba, he was led to Machu Picchu by local farmers in 1911. Other locals, Cusco explorers, and European missionaries already knew of the site, but it was Hiram Bingham who cleared the centuries of brush, excavated the ruins, and introduced them to the world through a special edition of National Geographic and 2 books.
