The 18th century stone fortress of Royal Felipe on the Port of Callao was built in a pentagonal shape with a place for cannons at each point and towers at 2 points. Named for King Philip V, its purpose was to defend against British pirates and privateers lured by the possibility of Inca gold. It was a player in the War of Independence and in the first years of independence the fortress provided refuge for the new government and parliament, inspiring San Martín to name it "Independence Castle".

The Basilica of Santo Domingo, originally the temple of Our Lady of the Rosary, has the distinction of housing the Altar of Peruvian Saints, which includes the remains of St Rose of Lima, St Martín de Porres, and St Juan Masias. It was constructed in 1540 on land provided by Francisco Pizarro and is now one of the oldest churches in Lima, found in the history center. Alongside you'll find the Convent, among whose baroque rooms and Sevillian-tiled patios the University of San Marcos was founded.

Lima's Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas was originally built in the 16th century as a rustic adobe structure and then rebuilt or transformed several times in the 18th century after passing through various earthquakes. Despite the addition of soaring towers and other grand elements, the basilica still retains its colonial façade and structure. The chapel houses the remains of Lima's founder, conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who laid the first stone and carried on his shoulders the first log.

Pucusana Harbour, south of Lima, is marked by colorful fishing boats and cevicherías. This fishing village doubles as a summer (Dec-Mar) retreat for the wealthy of Lima. You can take a boat tour or fishing trip or sunbathe on the most popular beaches, Las Ninfas and Pucusana. Explore the fish market and stop for a beachside ceviche of the day's catch. Towards the cliff you can see the Boquerón del Diablo (Devil Mouth) and Rostro de Cristo (Face of Christ) rock formations- the mouth groans!
