In Neptune Park you'll find the neoclassical Museo de Arte Italiano, whose building features a façade, architecture, and decorative elements such as reliefs and stained glass inspired by Italian masters. On the 100 year anniversary of the Independence of Peru, Italy gave Peru a collection of Italian art, bringing about the only European arts museum in Peru. The museum displays a collection of 20th century Italian sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, and ceramics representing all Italian.

Peru's oldest state museum explores Peruvian history from prehistoric through colonial times. Orient yourself with archeological site models, then tour the findings they yielded: stone carvings and ceramics dating as far back as 2,800BC, textiles including the intricate Paracas designs, mummies, burial tombs, and jewelry. Items include the 3000yr old Tello and Estela Raimondi obelisks. Complete your visit with a walk through the adjacent, former home of San Martín and Simón Bolívar.

The historical center of Lima, the Plaza de Armas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded the city in 1535. Earthquakes destroyed almost all of its original structures, leaving only the central bronze fountain, nice place to sit and relax. The 16th Cathedral is its oldest building; the founder of Lima Francisco Pizarro laid its first stone. Other notable colonial buildings are the Archbishop's Palace, Oidor House (the house of Justice), and the president's current residence, Government Palace.

One of the best-preserved churches in Lima is the 16th-18th baroque San Francisco Monastery and Church. Its opulent interior boasts alabaster floors, gold-leafed alters, a celebrated religious art collection, and a a library of 25 thousand rare volumes and scrolls spanning the 15th-18th century. The labyrinthine passages of its subterranean crypt served as the first cemetery of Lima, and contains bones and skulls from 25,000- 75,000 bodies, sometimes artfully arranged in decorative patterns.
